[finnix] Finnx hangs while "populating /dev"

Hi there,

I thought I finally had found what I was looking for so long, a replacement for Knoppix, freed of ALL the graphical stuff, providing me with a top-notch and up-to-date shell system for administration.

Yet, sigh, I cannot boot Finnix 91.1 on my Thinkpad T42. No matter which options I try, I don't seem to get past the "populating /dev" message.

The boot process used to give up with a udev-error

  udevd_event[1078]: run_program '/sbinmodprobe' abnormal exit

I found out that this is a common error on some hardware and that it can be avoided by disabling the onboard NIC in the BIOS. I've tried this, with the "success" that now FINNIX doesn't show the error anymore, but does not proceed booting either.

What can I do? Will an older version or v92 be of any help?

I wanted to use a very recent kernel, since I'm doing backups on external WD Harddisks, which suffer from a kernel Bug which causes them to usb_disconnect randomly on heavy I/O load, which has corrupted some filesystems doing backups under KNOPPIX v5.2.

Thanks for any helpful input,

Martin
