I also posted my concerns to the debian-legal mailing list and the 
only reponse that I got so far confirms that it is not strictly needed 
to recompile a package from source, but does also question how much 
sense it makes to package Balder for Debian:

I think I will stay with my private packages for the time being, but I 
am glad I did at least try and ask. ;)
